Eye of Horus Megaways, Blueprint Gaming's online upgrade of the land-based casino classic Eye of Horus, was a real winner. The original game's free spins feature remains, with the expanding Horus wild progressively transforming lower paying symbols into higher paying ones and adding free spins to your total. The only differences are a move from 10 set paylines to 15,625 ways to win and a vastly improved max payout of 10,000x.

If you’re looking to play the game today, you can create your PlayOJO account in under 60 seconds, and you’ll get 50 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza with no wagering requirements when you deposit (see T&C)!

Facts and Secrets: How much do you really know?

You know the game and how to play, so we won't bore you with the basics. Instead, let's take a peek at the lesser-known details of this already mysterious slot and see what we can uncover (trust us, you don't want to miss the juicy little blunder at the end!).

Eye of Horus Megaways Stats

Eye of Horus Megaways is the 6th game in the Eye of Horus series and was the first sequel to be ported online after the original. In the year it was released, Eye of Horus Megaways ranked as one of the industry’s top 10 video slots and it's still a popular choice for players today as one of the 200 best games.

At PlayOJO, it currently ranks 80th out of 6,000+ games and is our 4th most popular Megaways slot. Our top 100 games actually include three Eye of Horus slots: Eye of Horus: Golden Tablet, the original Eye of Horus, then Eye of Horus Megaways. Players give it a decent 4 out of 5 stars and the biggest win on it at PlayOJO to date is £19,096.

While testing, we noticed that the free spins feature actually triggers more often than in most other slots. During two separate sessions, we managed to unlock the free spins round once in 100 spins, then again in 200 spins. That compares very favourably to the feature hit rate of other popular slots, such as the 1 in 448 spins of Gates of Olympus, for example.

Eye of Horus Megaways Free Spins Video

Speaking of the feature, here's a look at our experience of triggering those 12 free spins. You'll get to see how the expanding Horus wild symbol takes on new powers, transforming lower paying symbols into higher paying ones in a progressive fashion, as well as upping the number of free spins:

Eye of Horus Megaways Symbology

Eye of Horus Megaways slot symbols jackal, falcon, scarab, ankh, flower, and card values

Ever wondered where the symbols come from? We have too, so we did some digging and here's what we uncovered for each symbol, in order of increasing value:

  • Lotus Flower: Closes and submerges at night and rises and reopens in the morning. In ancient Egypt it was a symbol of rebirth and purity.
  • Ankh: This so-called knot of the goddess Isis is the bond that holds all life together, aka the symbol of life.
  • Scarab Beetle: Ancient Egyptians saw young dung beetles emerge from carefully rolled dung balls, seemingly from nothing, leading to the scarab being revered as the symbol of transformation.
  • Horus Falcon: This is no plain old bird! The Horus falcon is the official animal of Egypt, symbolises kingship, and means god or divine.
  • Jackal: Better known as the god Anubis, guide to the underworld, always depicted black after the discoloration of the corpse after embalming (eww!), symbolising regeneration.
  • Eye of Horus: Often mistaken for the right Eye of Ra, the left eye belonged to Horus, symbolises protection and healing, and means the totality or unity restored (i.e., the afterlife).
  • Scatter: Temple of Khonsu, a real temple in Luxor, Egypt, dedicated to the moon god Khonsu.

Interestingly, in the game, these symbols are valued according to the flow of life in ancient Egyptian mythology. This order is reflected in the bonus round too, as the expanded Horus wild transforms symbols in the same order, progressing from the least valuable flower, symbolising birth, towards the highest value Eye of Horus, representing immortality!

Did you spot the Eye of Horus Megaways blunder?

Egyptian gods, Horus on the left, Ra in the centre, and the expanded Horus wild symbol with Ra crown on the right

If you're into Egyptology, you might have already picked up on this. The depiction of Horus in the expanded Horus wild symbol, with the crown of a red sun disk inside a cobra, is actually Ra. Oopsie, developers! Looks like they also forgot to background fill the loop of the ankh!

Our Verdict

Eye of Horus Megaways is an interesting upgrade from the original land-based casino slot that started it all. While its blippy sounds and lack of soundtrack reveal its origins, the modern Megaways mechanic and maximum win offer enough to keep players engaged. It's fascinating to delve deeper into the developer's symbol choices and how they tie in with existing Egyptology. And that big old blunder? Well, let's just keep that to ourselves, shall we? ;)
