Happy World Beard Day! We may have been celebrating all things dogs last week but we secretly think that a man’s real best friend is the other furry creature in their lives – their beard! Facial hair is more popular than ever and has flown back into fashion in recent years. And for those of you that don’t like beards, give them a chance – they grow on you.
It’s World Beard Day today and to mark the occasion, we wanted to officially crown the best bearded celebrity. We picked our six favourites and put it to you to decide our winner. Well, the votes have been counted and verified and we can announce that the winner is… going to be revealed after you’ve enjoyed our awesome beard facts to celebrate World Beard Day. Good things come to those who wait!
1. Just What The Doctor Ordered
Got the sniffles? Grow a beard. Feeling feverish? Grow a beard. Full blown bubonic plague? Sod it, grow a beard! We often take for granted how advanced medicine is in modern times because, believe it or not, doctors back in the day would often prescribe growing a beard to prevent illnesses. We’d rather have some antibiotics, thanks!
2. The One With The Jellyfish
You must have heard the disgusting horror stories about what to do when you’ve been stung by a jellyfish – nobody wants that near their face. When Sean Conway swam the entire length of Great Britain, he grew a beard to protect his face from being stung by jellyfish. Put it away lads, there’s a new remedy in town!
3. Beard Fear
Everybody’s scared of something. Spiders. Clowns. The dawning reality that death is inevitable. Well, some people suffer from pogonophobia, which is a fear of beards. Each to their own but we’re not sure a horror movie starring Brian Blessed about a man refusing to shave is quite enough to get our pulses racing.
4. ZZ Chop
Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill from rock band ZZ Top are another pair of our favourite furry celebrities. Their iconic blonde beards have made them stand out since their formation back in the ‘60s. And the pair love their beards so much that they reportedly turned down a $1 million offer from Gillette to shave them off for a promotional campaign. How much?!
5. 33 Days Later
Over the course of a lifetime, the average man spends around 800 hours tending to his facial hair, which is the equivalent of just over 33 days. Men, think about what you could do with that extra month if beards didn’t exist!
6. There’s something in your beer-d!
We’ve all got that one stingy friend that always tries to get out of buying a round at the pub. If they really want to get more for their money, tell them to grow a moustache. Guinness has revealed that the average moustache collects one and a half pints of beer every year. Waste not, want not!
7. No beard? No problem!
Not everybody can grow a beard but for those out there that are struggling, fear not – there’s a solution! For the modest sum of around $5,000, you can undergo a transplant that involves taking hair from the top of the head and popping it under your chin. Everyone’s a winner!
8. Is this your card?
Forget about poker faces, there’s only one face you should be looking out for next time you’re shuffling a pack of cards. Can you spot the odd one out? The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted that the king of hearts is the only king without a moustache. Long live the king!
9. Life, Death and Beard Taxes!
Nowadays, beards are pretty trendy, but that hasn’t always been the case – just ask Peter the Great. Back in the 17th Century, the Russian Tsar decided he didn’t like beards, so he imposed a tax on anybody who had one, meaning noblemen were forced to pay in order to hold a beard licence.
10. Jack Of All Trades
How big a tip do you give your barber? It would probably be a lot more if they’d just removed your tonsils as well! Up until the mid-18th century, barbers doubled as surgeons and would often use the same tools to shave people’s faces as they would to perform minor surgeries. Hopefully they cleaned them first!
And the winner is…
Alright, alright, we’ve kept you in suspense for long enough! It’s time to reveal who YOUR favourite bearded celeb is. We put it to a vote and out of Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jason Momoa, Jim Carey and Billy Gibbons, your winner is…
Robert Pattinson! Who knew so many of you were Twilight fans?
Happy World Beard Day everyone!
