Nothing comes close to the mystery of ancient Egypt; its various gods, the culture’s relationship with space and the stars, and the feat of building those massive pyramids! Casino slot games come in all shapes and sizes, but arguably the most popular and engaging are those that capture the essence of this ancient civilisation: Egyptian slots. Think Cleopatra (“twice as nice!”) and the epic Book of Dead for starters!

Cleopatra

Cleopatra slot with cartouche, scarab and eye of ra symbols, and a win featuring two cleopatra wilds

There can be no talk of Egyptian themed slots without mentioning the one and only Cleopatra. This timeless classic is more than 12 years old, having launched online back in 2012, but was (and still is!) a staple in top-notch land-based casinos way before then.

Wins featuring the slot’s ornate Cleopatra wild symbol are doubled, resulting in the mysterious maiden’s words of ‘twice as nice’ in a rather alluring silky tone of voice. That doubling wild effect is taken one step further in the free spins feature, which awards 15 free spins with wild wins tripled.

Queen of the Pyramids

Queen of the Pyramids slot showing light stone-coloured reels and stacked Cleopatra wild symbols on reel 4

The famous female pharaoh of ancient Egypt shows up again in Playtech Origins’ elaborate 2023 slot, Queen of the Pyramids, which manages to cram in more features than gifts for the gods in old Cleo’s sarcophagus! Those same sultry eyes serve as the game’s wild symbol, while the Mega Cash Collect mechanism allows you to rake in any visible prizes, not to mention activating additional free spins, unlocking extra reels, and triggering one of the slot’s four jackpots.

Book of Dead

Book of Dead slot showing Ace symbols on the first four reels on an ornate reel set with stone pillars on either side

Play’n GO is responsible for arguably one of the most popular Egyptian themed slots of all time (apart from Cleopatra!). Book of Dead was the first of the Rich Wilde slots, released in 2016, and remains the most popular in the series. What makes the game special is the magical combination of attractive design and simple gameplay. Highlights are a dual-purpose wild and scatter symbol (the gold tomb), and a free spins feature with one randomly selected symbol that can expand to cover the entire reels!

If you like this one, try another of Rich Wilde’s adventures, Legacy of Dead.

Banquet of Dead

Banquet of Dead slot featuring Queen Nitocris, fan, tomb and ornate card value symbols and a 5x3 reel set

The ‘Of Dead’ series doesn’t always focus on Rich Wilde, his daughter Cat Wilde or the mysterious Uncle Gerard. As is the case in the 2024 release Banquet of Dead, sometimes Play’n GO’s focus is on the allure of ancient Egypt itself. Queen Nitocris is the star of this spooky slot show, which features the same dual-purpose wild and scatter symbol mechanism and random expanding symbol in the free spins feature as Book of Dead. However, this time around, you’ll also be treated to a removal of low-paying symbols during the feature.

John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen

John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen slot with bag, gun, pharaoh and John Hunter symbols on the 5x3 reel set

Sticking with the theme of tomb-plundering, Pragmatic Play’s 2019 release of John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen sought to magic in some of the success that Play’n GO experienced, with the Indiana Jones style John Hunter playing the role of rugged adventurer. John revisits Egypt several times across the series, but in this episode, the Money Collect Feature is the highlight, with different Collect symbols multiplying, expanding and boosting win multipliers. Book of Dead this isn’t, but it’s still a good title if you like collect style features.

Eye of Horus

Eye of Horus slot showing 5x3 reel set with fan, ankh and card value symbols

Granted, this is not the most elaborate of the Egyptian themed slots, but Reel Time Gaming’s 2016 release of Eye of Horus hides a pretty unique feature. The falcon god Horus is the game’s expanding wild symbol, but during free spins he actually upgrades the tablet symbols for higher payout potential. Get insider info on how to get the most out of this game in our Eye of Horus tips.

PlayOJO is home to a number of Eye of Horus games, including ones sporting the popular Megaways mechanism, and multiple random jackpots as featured in Eye of Horus: The Golden Tablet.

Gears of Horus

Gears of Horus slot featuring expanded 8x8 grid layout filled with colourful gems and egyptian symbols

The falcon god gets a steampunk style makeover in Pragmatic Play’s unique 2024 slot Gears of Horus, which starts off with a 6×6 grid layout that expands from its borders on consecutive tumbling wins to an 8×8 grid. Throw in blocks of wilds to the expanded grid and increasing multipliers to the free spins feature and you’ve got a really engaging Egypt casino game.

The only thing it’s really missing is the iconic sphinx, but that mythical creature is the star of the slot show in Thunderkick’s Beat the Beast: Mighty Sphinx.

Ankh of Anubis

Ankh of Anubis slot with a unique design of 3 symbols on reels 1 and 5, and 4 symbols on the each of the centre reels

It’s quite common to find Egyptian slot games sporting a sort of mashup theme and Play’n GO’s 2019 release Ankh of Anubis is a good example, with its sci-fi-meets-ancient-Egypt design, complete with planets on the horizon and spaceships zipping through the air! Even the card value symbols feel somewhat trekky! Bolstering the game’s appeal are random Anubis wilds, and retriggerable free spins with collectible ankh symbols that unlock additional wilds.

Guardians of Luxor 2

Guardians of Luxor 2 slot with 5x3 reel layout containing ornate Egyptian eye of ra, ankh, bird and Anubis symbols

Both Anubis and Horus star in Red Rake’s 2024 sequel slot Guardians of Luxor 2, which features a very similar bay backdrop to Ankh of Anubis. This recent Egypt slot machine release is just as feature-heavy as the original. Contrary to other slots in which landing consecutive wins fills a meter, it’s the non-winning ones that do so here, unlocking the Power of Horus mini game. Also waiting to be spun in are the Sacred Scarabs, Osiris Wild Respin, Free Spins and Wheel Bonus features, making this slot quite a busy one!

God of the afterlife, Anubis is a popular character in ancient slots, with many PlayOJOers also loving Secret of Anubis.

Ancient Script

Ancient Script slot featuring a clean 5x3 reel set with pyramid, sphinx, flail and crook, and card value symbols

Red Tiger’s 2016 slot Ancient Script is perfect for us sensitive souls who sometimes prefer something with a little less intensity. While a lot of Egyptian slot games can be a bit in-your-face, this one benefits from a clean layout, friendly card value suits and simple yet attractive features. On any winning spin, you could land expanding symbols at random, the sphinx symbol is both wild and scatter, and the free spins feature takes on a calming blue purple hue while those expanding symbols unfurl on every spin.

If you like the expanding symbols of Temptation Queen, this one should probably be on your playlist too.

Our Verdict

Some of the best themed slots are of ancient Egypt and I must admit, I’m guilty of loving these pharaoh, sphinx and mysterious riches style slots more than most. There’s something compelling about the lore of the ancient Egyptians, their revered gods, and the baffling question of how those pyramids were built!

The best of these Egypt slots manage to capture this ancient mystery while still providing engaging features. My personal favourites are those with unlockable elements, like Pragmatic Play’s Gears of Horus and Playtech Origin’s Queen of the Pyramids. That said, there’s still a firm place in my heart for cool classics like Book of Dead, Ancient Script and, of course, the ultimate pharaoh herself, Cleopatra.
