Hey OJOers! We’ve just released our first ever annual Fun Report and it’s jam-packed with fascinating facts and revelations on what we Brits like to do for fun. From walking 10k steps a day to Netflix and chill (both kinds!) and everything in between, check out what’s trending in leisure time tendencies, including the what, when, who with, and how much!
What is the Fun Report?
The Fun Report details the results of an annual survey led by ‘feel the fun’ fanatics PlayOJO and carried out by Global Market Insights. The 2024 Fun Report survey ran from July to September. We asked 600 UK adults aged 18 to 65+ a range of questions about leisure activities, to find out what we as a nation do for fun, how much time and money we spend on leisure activities, and how this differs between sexes and generational groups.
Here’s what this year’s Fun Report revealed…
The Fun Stuff
Curious to know how popular your favourite leisure activity is? Here are some of the juiciest bits from this year’s Fun Report, including the top activities, the best de-stressors, and first date ventures. You’ll also get a sneaky peek at how often we’re finding time for fun, who we’re doing it with, and how much we’re forking out for it!
What’s most fun?
The Fun Report reveals that most Brits (96%) find fun in walking, followed closely by running, streaming a movie, or watching YouTube (95%). However, a whopping 81% of us are happy to just lie on the sofa or in bed – bliss!
Generally, ladies find fun in more relaxing activities such as going out for dinner (30%) or watching a movie (30%) or TV show (28%), while men prefer something more active like cycling (30%), cooking (30%), or running (28%).
Best to de-stress?
After a stressful day at work, 9 out of 10 cats prefer nothing more than lying on the sofa scrolling on the phone, with three quarters of us popping on a favourite film or TV show, and just less (70%) hopping in for a nice long bath or shower.
About a third of Gen Zers and Millennials de-stress best with a bit of gaming: casino, console, or board – which do you prefer? A quarter of folks chill best with a bit of gossip, while just over a fifth prefer a session between the sheets – ooh, kinky!
Following fun trends
Just under a quarter of Brits try things they’ve seen online, like running, yoga, and walking 10k steps a day, with ladies (34%) and older Millennials (7%) more likely than men (29%) and Gen Zers (6%).
Fancy something a bit more off the beaten track? So do about 5% of Brits apparently, who prefer things like crochet, pottery painting, and the very trendy Sip & Paint – cheers one-ear!
First date fun
We Brits still think a typical date consists of dinner (35%), a trip down the local (23%), or out to see a movie (17%), but it seems women (45%) fancy the dinner more than men (35%), who’d prefer to do their romancing at the pub (30%).
Gen Zers are a bit more active when in search of romance – literally! – opting for running club, yoga/pilates classes (12%), or a gym class (10%) to find love. Looking for love yourself? The stats reveal the local supper club is the top choice for almost a fifth of us, followed by a pub quiz (17%) and book club (14%) – well, that’s a new spin on clubbing!
How much are we spending on fun?
The Fun Report shows we love our fun enough to spend about £100 a month on leisure activities, with men spending about twice as much as women (£75/mo). Interestingly, there’s a generational trend on fun spend too, with Gen Xers and older Millennials – that’s 35- to 54-year-olds – spending more than any other age group in the 18-65+ survey sample.
How often are we having fun?
More than a third of us are making sure to factor fun into our week at least 2-3 times, with 12% of Brits getting their dose of fun daily. Gen Zers seems to be the best at setting aside time for leisure, with 30% of the generation making room for fun every day.
Who do we do it with?
Unsurprisingly, almost a third of us like to have fun with friends, but a substantial 22% prefer to go solo during leisure time – go introverts! One in ten of us, and an impressive 21% of Gen Zers in particular, don’t care who we’re with, as long as we’re having fun – that’s the spirit!
